Navigating Thai Visas: What You Need to Know
If you’re planning to visit or live in Thailand, securing the right visa is an essential first step. Thailand offers a wide range of visa categories to suit different purposes — whether you’re passing through as a tourist, relocating for work, or settling down permanently. Here’s a breakdown of the most common options available to foreign nationals.
Tourist Visa
Ideal for leisure travel or medical visits, the Tourist Visa permits stays of up to 60 days and is available in both single and multiple-entry formats. Employment of any kind is strictly not permitted under this visa.
90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa
A single-entry visa designed for those entering Thailand with a specific purpose in mind — such as work, business, study, religious activities, or visiting family. It also serves as a common stepping stone toward obtaining longer-term residency options.
Business Visa (Non-Immigrant B)
Suited for individuals looking to take up employment or establish a business in Thailand.
Marriage Visa
A long-term visa for foreign nationals legally married to a Thai citizen who wish to reside in the country.
Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant OA)
Designed for those aged 50 and above who wish to spend their retirement years in Thailand, subject to financial and other qualifying criteria.
SMART Visa
A 4-year visa tailored for high-value individuals — including investors, executives, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals — operating within Thailand’s targeted growth industries.
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
Commonly referred to as the digital nomad visa, the DTV carries a 5-year validity but permits stays of up to 180 days per entry. It’s built around the needs of remote workers and location-independent professionals.
Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR)
The LTR Visa is a premium residency option with a 10-year validity and a 5-year renewable multiple-entry permit. It covers four distinct categories — retirees, investors, remote workers, and skilled professionals — and comes with notable perks such as annual (rather than quarterly) immigration reporting, fast-track airport processing, and preferential income tax rates.
Thailand Elite Visa
One of the most convenient long-term options available, the Elite Visa offers membership-based packages ranging from 5 to 20 years. Cardholders enjoy an extensive range of lifestyle privileges, from spa access and hotel benefits to priority immigration lanes.
Visa Exemption & Visa on Arrival
Depending on your passport, you may not need to arrange a visa in advance at all. The Visa Exemption Scheme allows eligible nationalities to enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days, with a possible 30-day extension. For those not covered by this scheme, the Visa on Arrival program offers a 15-day entry option, applied for upon arrival at the port of entry for a nominal fee.
