Measures and Guidelines for Visa Issuance to Promote Tourism and Stimulate Thailand’s Economy

The Thai government has announced new measures to boost tourism and the country’s economy by improving the visa issuance process to facilitate tourists and students. These changes include expanding visa rights and extending the length of stay in Thailand. The key updates are as follows:

Expansion of Visa Rights and Visa Issuance Improvements:

  • Extension of Free Visa: Tourists from 93 countries/territories are now allowed to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days for tourism or short-term work, an increase from the previous 57 countries/territories. Check the list of visa-exempt countries.
  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): The list of countries eligible for visa-on-arrival has been expanded to 31 countries/territories, up from the previous 19 countries/territories.
  • Introduction of Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): This visa is for foreigners who wish to stay in Thailand for both work and travel (workcation) or to participate in various activities such as learning Muay Thai, cooking, or receiving medical treatments. The visa allows a stay of up to 180 days per entry, with a 5-year visa validity.

Extension of Stay for Foreign Students:

  • Foreign students pursuing undergraduate or higher education and holding a Non-Immigrant Visa (ED Code) can extend their stay in Thailand for up to 1 year after graduation to find work, travel, or engage in other activities.
